Pedagogical initiatives

What has been developed over the years by a self-directed, partly home-grown practices and experiments has evolved into a teaching innovation that is unique to SPJIMR. A judicious mix of classroom and beyond-classroom interaction and learning is strongly supported by a host of pedagogic tools such as workshops, seminars, panel discussions, CEO lecture series, simulations, group learning, field work, visits, internship, live projects, films and role plays.

While due importance is given to classroom learning, the effort is to build suitable stimuli in non-classroom learning, interaction and internship to facilitate the development of the right attitudes, skills and knowledge on which the participant can base his or her own architecture of self-development.

Beyond Classroom Learning
A proactive and formally planned programme for developing attitudes and skills - completing the troika of management capability development - has been firmly institutionalized within SPJIMR's beyond classroom curriculum through a variety of vehicles.

Assessment & Development of Managerial Abilities & Potential (ADMAP) -
Going by the concept of “learning by doing”, ADMAP is all about learning administration. It is an indigenously developed initiative of SPJIMR where the participants choose either an institute committee or a BMC project to work on during the first year of their program. This presupposes working in a team with people of varying individual goals but working towards a common organizational purpose. It acts as a laboratory to test the theories. The outcome is a rich learning experience of managing people, resources and systems. Industries have responded kindly to this initiative and have recognized our participants as the ones who "hit the ground running". ADMAP helps the participants understand the nuances not only through self-learning but also via 'Collective Wisdom of the group' & the renowned faculties from the industry.

Development of Corporate Citizenship (DOCC) -
DOCC was initiated at SPJIMR with a view to bring management education closer to reality in the Indian context. Our aim is to inculcate attitudes and values in future managers by sensitizing the participants to the realities of the under-privileged. It also helps the NGO sector to strengthen their management by improving effectiveness and efficiency through seminars, workshops and publications.

Participants are expected to undertake a project with any organization working in the social sector, for ex. NGOs, the Government of India schemes, for a period of 6 weeks at the end of first year. Projects over the years have spanned across sectors like primary education, healthcare, information systems in rural areas etc.

Abhyudaya - SPJIMR curriculum encourages a cooperative outlook that recognizes the value of sharing and mutual respect The essence of the course lies in sensitising the participants towards the trials and tribulations of the under priviliged societies in Urban India. Our motto is “Learning and growing together with SPJIMR”. This program gives us ample opportunities to dedicate ourselves to the noble cause of human development; the primary medium being education. We guide our ‘Sitaras’ (the bright stars of tomorrow) through their ups and downs for their overall development of a versatile character. Innovative programs like ABHYUDAYA encourage our participants to develop a holistic view of our country and its immediate managerial requirements in terms of tasks and challenges. Further it strengthens their will power to overcome all difficulties in life and emerge as efficient and effective leaders.

Autumn Project - During the second year of the course, PGDM participants concentrate on their chosen specializations. As a part of their learning, after completing one trimester of their specialization, they work on live projects with a corporate for a period of 8 weeks. It gives them an exposure to real life organizational situations, drawing parallels between management theory and practice. It also helps them to select a specific industry or sector to work with in the future.
Our participants, armed with the maturity and experience, gained from the rigorous curriculum and experiential learning process, have richly contributed to the organizations in terms of conceptual inputs.

Personal Growth Lab (PG Lab) - Believing in innovative pedagogical innovations, SPJIMR conducts the PG Lab that strives for experiential and lifelong learning for the PGDM participants. The PG Lab is designed to make participants understand themselves, their strengths, attitudes and personality through various activities, that includes ice-breaker events, group tasks, team building games, trekking etc., so as to make the participants  appreciate team dynamics thereby learn the skills needed for effective and synergetic team work.

Anandwan (The Age of Innocence) - Anandwan is a noble initiative, started by Baba Amte, to treat and rehabilitate leprosy victims from the disadvantaged sections of society. Today it is not just a shelter for these patients, but serves the livelihood of 3500 people, serving the blind, deaf and dumb. It is a self-sufficient village with people engaged in more than 100 different occupations. All they need from outside is oil, petrol, salt and sugar. Year after year, Anandwan has been inviting the students of SPJIMR, silently though, through the special bonding both the organizations fondly share.

Management by Gita (Gita Shibir) - This is another unique experience at SPJIMR. It’s a course in which participants and faculty conducts a series of discussions on religious scriptures and their relevance with the current management thinking. The participants learn how the concept of dharma can be applied to our daily lives as well as the corporate world.  Such discussions embedded with discourses from renowned gurus broaden the vision of participants and enables them to appreciate eastern ethos.
